What To Look For In A Lawnmower

Landscaping significantly improves the aesthetic, and sometimes, the financial value of a property. There are several ways to make your lawn exceptional, one way is to have a well-designed and well-executed landscaping. But more than any garden features, a well-trimmed grass is the most important element of your turf.

Your personality is mirrored clearly on your garden. A garden with mismatched features and untrimmed lawn couldn’t possibly be owned by a conscientious neighbor. Similarly, professionals and corporate individuals will be placed in better light if they have well-maintained gardens both at their homes and their offices. An unkempt garden simply will unnecessarily mirror their haphazard processes.

An indispensable piece of lawn equipment is the mower. There are several lawn mowers on the market. Manual mowers tend to be the cheapest in the bunch but can be very cumbersome to work with especially for bigger lawns. Petrol powered mowers are particularly good for cutting thick and tall grass but their major disadvantage are their exhaust emissions and poor responsiveness on non-flat terrains. Electric powered mowers are the most preferred variety because they are cleaner and more efficient. There are also walk-behind mowers and those which you can ride. The former is definitely more practical if you have a small lawn.

Hands down the most versatile mowers available are those that already have a 3-in-1 operation, that is, it can collect, mulch, or side discharge cut grass. An example would be the Flymo Multimo 360xc. The product is packed with features to make lawn mowing more efficient and easier to complete. With a design that shouts high-end but carries a very reasonable price tag, the Flymo Multimo 360xc is definitely the best bang for buck in the bunch.

It is also lighter compared to its contemporaries, and can be tucked away conveniently into your storage when not in use. The Flymo 360xc also has 15 meters of power cord that come with an Easi-Reel system to ensure the cables don’t get tangled up. The Flymo 360xc also has a 40 liter grassbox which simply means you will be wasting less time emptying.By mowing once a week or semimonthly, your lawn will look like a professionally maintained turf.

Creating An Indoor Herb Garden

Fresh herbs can make a world of difference in your meals.  Instead of buying them at the
grocery store and getting too much at once or a bunch that isn’t as fresh as it could be,
grow your own.  Grow a variety or just your favorite, in a window box or on the kitchen
counter.  It is an easy introduction to indoor gardening.

To start your own herb garden you have two options, you can go to your local nursery
and purchase some seedlings or grow your own from seed.  Either way is fine, but if you
are a novice the seedlings are the way to go.

Once you have your seedlings at home, you can replant them or for the first season you
can leave them in the small plastic pot that they come in.  If you do decide to replant
them, do not pack in the soil too tightly and place a small amount of gravel or woodchips
at the bottom of the pot for good drainage.  If you want to grow your herbs from seeds,
follow the instructions on the package carefully and use a container large enough to
accommodate future root growth.  Herbs also like air circulation, placing near an open
window can provide both the sunshine and air movement that they need to thrive.

If your herbs are growing too large for their pots, you can separate a portion of them
(including the roots) and transplant them outside in the spring or summer time.  You will
double the amount of herbs you can grow.  On the flip side, if you already have an
outdoor herb garden it is a simple matter to take a portion of each plant indoors to have
fresh herbs all winter long too.

Read the recommendations and information that comes with your herb plants, not all are
suitable for indoor gardening.

Who Needs Garden Tool Sheds?

If a homeowner has a garden, they need a shed. A garden requires plenty of work including mowing grass, trimming trees and planting flowers. Each of these tasks requires tools. A rake, hoes, shovels and lawnmowers, not exactly tools you would store in the laundry room or basement. A garden hose, a watering can or a sprinkler, these items would probably clutter the front entrance. If a homeowner has a garden, they should really have a shed. Garden tools ought to be kept in the shed, not in the house.

Garden and sheds belong together. A garden is used for all sorts of activities. Children play in the garden, with big toys which need to be stored away. Teenagers use the garden to kick around a football or pass around a basketball. Adults enjoy the garden to simply sit out and enjoy a moonlit night or challenge friends to a game of horseshoes. When the fun and games have finished in the garden, the toys need a place to go. The garden shed is a great place to store the family’s toys.

It would be wonderful if people never had to worry about snow and harsh winters. Unfortunately in many areas winters can dump plenty of nasty weather. The patio furniture, the barbeque and the hammock all need a place for the winter. The garden shed is the normal place to store these items. Of course in the winter there are items which need to come out of the garden shed such as the snow-blower and the kid’s snowboards. There’s no doubt that garden and sheds belong together and garden sheds are a must for families and avid gardeners.

For homeowners who have gardens and have realized their need for a shed, there are many options available to them. The local building supply store or maybe even the garden center may sell garden sheds or at least be able to point homeowners in the right direction to find them. If an individual is familiar with the Internet, they know that the world-wide web is very useful in providing information for all sorts of things including buying information about garden sheds. Using a search engine like Google or Yahoo, searching garden and sheds, a homeowner ought to find plenty of details regarding buying garden sheds online or offline.

Hand protection is essential when gardening, as there is hardly any joy where there is discomfort. Gardening gloves are practical first and foremost as you have to dig and clean with them; therefore, they need to fit well on your hands. The protected impact with weeds and soil is thus a lot more rewarding. Thick or thin, with or without attachable accessories, gardening gloves come in various models and designs.

One other important aspect you should check for the gardening gloves you buy is the fastening mode. Some protect the hands up to the wrist while others resemble a sleeve. Then, the materials that gardening gloves are made of should be washable, hypoallergenic and comfortable. Depending on the gardening job that you perform, you may have to change gardening gloves; thus you need to buy more pairs.

There is a limited offer for gardening gloves during the warm seasons, because most of the supplies sell in spring. You can try to shop online if the local retailer does not have the right models in stock. You can't try the gloves on when ordering on the Internet, and this could be a major inconvenience. As for price, quality products are always more expensive.

Before you go shopping in home and garden stores or in department stores, you need to be well informed on the types and sizes of gardening gloves that you need to perform different tasks. The gardening jobs vary greatly, and so does the nature of the equipment required. The flexibility of the gardening gloves could be an issue. Besides the snug fit, the gardening gloves should allow you to carry on with very intense activities.

For more gardeners in the family, buy gardening gloves for everybody. Using gloves that don't fit could render  gardening difficult or unpleasant. If the gloves don't make a good match, they won't allow for a good grasp and they will make the various gardening tasks more difficult.

Roof And Balcony Garden Design Ideas

If you live in the midst of the crowded city and have a little roof or balcony area, you have a perfect place to design and build a garden where most never get to grow. These areas present a unique challenge for landscaping ideas because they are liable to be in the path of every wind that blows, and scorched by sun. Still, you can design some screening to block the wind as well as make some shade for sun protection.

The first thing you need to do when you plan a garden like this is to study how the building is built. See if you can find out what type of materials the roof is made of. And if it's a balcony, the materials and how it's constructed. A balcony can be a small space. If it will have to hold a lot of potted plants, containers, and other elements, it should be able to support the weight. When designing and building small gardens on balconies or roofs, the roof has to be water tight so that there are no leaks. Also, a good system for drainage is important to help channel excess water away. There also needs to be safe access to the roof if it is to be easily enjoyed.

Around your roof or balcony garden there is always the possibility of poles or wires. These can be masked or hidden with a little thoughtful planting. Taller container plants can also screen your neighbor's view and form a green barrier while smaller pots full of flowers will add some color. Be careful to not overcrowd the little bit of space that you have to work with when working with small gardens, patios, and courtyards. Make sure there is room for somewhere to sit - and a pleasant view deserves to be framed rather than annihilated by a rooftop jungle.

It's often best practice to use long light weight wood planters rather than a lot of small pots as it will spread the weight of the load out over more area. Remember to add some soil moistening and retaining products to your soil mixture. These types of products will help cut back with maintenance needs as plants in a soil mix with these products in it require less daily water. If the roof can't hold much weight, another consideration for plants is hydroponics. Hydroponically grown plants only need nutrient liquid and a light base so the pots with plants don't weigh near as much as dirt filled pots.

You may also consider raising a small worm colony in your balcony or roof garden. This can produce some rich organic soil for your plants while also cutting back on your garbage and waste.

Gardening services address the needs of both private users and corporations. A company dealing in gardening can be specialized in one or more gardening services, such as lawn mowing, tree care, flower plantation and many others. Yet, not all the companies that advertise in this domain provide the same credibility or reliability.

There are organizations and official associations that guarantee and support the quality of gardening services provided by their members. The Tree Care Industry Association, for example, passes accreditation and regulates standards for businesses in the gardening domain. Nevertheless, lots of home businesses provide quality gardening services without being part of these associations. Small companies will thus find customers by word of mouth as this is also the best way to improve their reputation.

In fact, landscape design represents one of the most expensive of all gardening services because it can be handled only by specialized professionals and it requires investments in outdoor lighting systems, garden furniture, water pumps, and much more.

Gardening services involve more than just trimming the hedge. Soil sampling is one type of complex service that is available with scientific institutes only. Thus, the institute will analyze the sample of garden soil that you send them. Then, you will receive a full report on the soil variety and the best methods to grow plants and enhance the gardening results. Contact governmental agencies, research labs and university centers as they are the providers of such gardening services.

A similar type of test is related to insect control. Insect identification is essential for farmers, gardeners and home owners that need to improve the efficiency of their work. When the right insect control methods are used, crops will improve significantly. Moreover, some gardening services can be customized to the gardener's needs.

BinSafe Easy Access

Wheelie bins have become a necessary, but ugly, element of waste disposal in our homes. They are extremely useful but don't exactly look appealing, particularly the larger bins. Is it possible to disguise this useful monster in between collection days? Here, we will discuss several successful ways to store a wheelie bin.

Firstly, the portable screen.

The portable screen is a relatively cost effective solution to this unsightly problem. They can be purchased from garden centres or hardware stores and come in a variety of materials. A popular choice is the bamboo screen that can act as a dividing wall in a garden: others are made from expanding trellis made from either wood or pvc slats.

Because of their portability, these screens can be moved to different places around the garden and can also be used to hide other essential items in the garden that you don't want people to see. They are also ideal for people who are renting: the screen can move with you to your new address.

Next, a permanent screen.

Permanent screens can be made from bamboo and trellis also, but they are fixed at a particular point in the garden. A fixed trellis can be used also as a support for a climbing plant, thereby creating a more attractive, living screen. Perfumed flowers can also reduce the more unpleasant smells emitting from the wheelie bin.

A permanent screen can in reality be made from many different materials, including timber, metal or even masonry and can be custom designed to fit the size of the bin or accommodate multiple bins.

Have you considered a shed for the bins?

It is also possible to install a shed that is purpose built for the bin. These sheds are slightly higher than the bin, as this allows for the lid to be lifted and have an access door at the front of the structure. As with the permanent screen, these sheds can be made to suit several bins or a number of sizes. These sheds can be made from wood or metal to your specifications.

Sheds for wheelie bins should ideally have a concrete floor " this will make cleanups of spills much more straightforward.

Can you build your own?

If you are handy with basic tools and construction, then you will probably be able to design and build your own screen or shed for your wheelie bin. This way, you can be sure that you have the dimensions and style you want and it can often be less expensive to construct your own. Some hardware stores have plans to help you with the measurements and assembly. You can also buy a screen or shed in kit form and assemble it yourself.

If however, do-it-yourself is not your thing, you are probably better advised to choose from ready made wheelie bin storage solutions or having someone custom build from your requirements.

Where is the best place to situate your screen or shed?

When considering where to position the screen or shed, you should be aware of where the collection point is and the proximity to the residence as well as having the bin situated where unpleasant odours will not be detected from the house. Find a happy medium " not too far away from the house that it becomes a bother to take out the garbage, yet not too far from the collection point that you are leaving it to the last minute to put it out.

One final point

Choose a screen or shed that suits your budget and your individual style. That way, those ugly but necessary monsters will be pleasantly disguised.

Also known in other terms like elephant ears, monkeyweed, fleeceflower, pea shooters, and Himalayan fleece vine, Japanese knotweed is a herbaceous destructive plant that is a member of the family of Polygonaceae.  It is native to lands in eastern Asia such as China, Japan, and Korea.

The plant is known to have a lot of uses.  These include being a great origin of vitamins and minerals for instance the vitamins A and C, phosphorous, potassium, manganese, and zinc.  It is also known to be a source of reservatol, a compound that helps lower LDL or bad cholesterol and delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Despite its uses, still, why is it that attempts are made to eliminate the Japanese knotweed?

This can be passed on to the original surroundings of the plant, which is of harsh and volcanic conditions.  It was then brought in to the United States and Europe in the 19th century and it was used as ornamental plants and likewise to prevent soil erosion.  However, what should have been a helpful plant has been established to be actually damaging.  In fact, laws have been executed with reference to this notorious plant species.  These consist of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (as amended) 1981, The Environmental Protection Act 1990, The Environmental Protection (Duty of Care) Regulations 1991, and the Third party litigation, where payment can be obligatory from anyone that permits the plant to spread onto other land properties.

The World Conservation Union has referred to Japanese knotweed as one of the world’s one hundred most horrible species.  And, the institute has all the basis to do so.  Once it is introduced to a particular place or property, eradicating it can be such a complicated job.  It propagates through tiny pieces of stem and root prunings.  This means that if you happen to leave behind even a tiny part of the roots beneath the surface of the ground that part can still grow as a new plant.

Moreover, this plant has the power to grow through drains, walls, and even concrete walls.  Obviously, it can cause a good deal of harm to land properties.  Land value has a tendency to drop when a specific field is attacked by this perennial plant.  It also creates troubles to gardeners because it can infest the garden and stop other plants from growing.

It is then not surprising why many people invest on the elimination of Japanese knotweed.  However, proper caution should be exercised when trying to eliminate the plant.  Instead of getting rid of it, you may be helping its proliferation.  To make sure that you do not do this, ask for pieces of advice from professionals or hire the services of a company that specializes on the proper removal of the perennial plant.

With a scientific term of Fallopia japonica, Japanese knotweed is a herbaceous plant that is native to eastern Asia, specifically in China, Japan, and Korea.  It has empty stems with distinct nodules, making it appear like a bamboo, even if the two plants are not directly associated.

Even if the most often used scientific name of the plant these days is Fallopia japonica, it is also called in other scientific terms: Polygonum cuspidatum and Reynoutria japonica.  The latter is its oldest name, which was given in 1777 by a Dutch botanist.  In addition, its other English names include donkey rhubarb, elephant ears, fleeceflower, Hancock’s curse, Himalayan fleece vine, and pea shooters.

There are various uses for Japanese knotweed.  Beekeepers give importance to the plant as it is an essential supplier of nectar for honeybees at some stage in the year when there is little flowering.  It creates monofloral honey, which is also called as bamboo honey.  Moreover, the plant’s new stems are edible, which taste similar to mild rhubarb.  It is a good provider of vitamin C, vitamin A, manganese, potassium, phosphorus, and zinc.

Another proven use of the plant is that it is an origin of resveratol, the same substance seen in the skin of grapes and red wine.  The substance allows to reduce bad cholesterol, thus lowering the risk of heart attacks.  One more useful substance obtained from this plant is emodin, which helps normalize bowel movement.  Likewise, the plant is especially useful because of its capacity to survive at any time of the year and in severe situation.

However, as much as Japanese knotweed has a lot of uses, it is regarded as an invasive plant especially in Europe and in North America.  In the 19th century, the plant was brought to Europe and the United States, and it was used to feed animals, as an ornamental plant, and to prevent soil erosion.  The plant has been discovered to be a liability, nevertheless.

It is regarded as one of the world’s 100 most horrible invasive species.  It is considered as a grave threat to land developers, builders, and gardeners.  Moreover, the dangers it may cause include mutilation to roads, pavements, drains, walls, and even buildings.  It may likewise inhabit river banks, therefore preventing access to rivers.  One more Japanese knotweed problem is that it grows quickly and easily.  It can spread from small pieces of root cuttings, and it can grow to three to four inches a day.  Due to the harm that this species of plant can cause, the UK for example has come up with the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.  The Act forbids its spread in the wild.

The Japanese knotweed, certainly, has two sides. It is a benefit as well as a problem all at once. And, it cannot be instantly dismissed as a good or a harmful weed all together.

How to Choose Plants For Your Garden

Choosing Plants for Your Garden

Many times we buy plants on impulse then find there is nowhere in the garden that really suits them. Before buying plants carefully examine your garden to see how much sun and shade it gets, whether the soil is well drained or waterlogged and whether your aspect is sheltered or windswept. You'll then be equipped to go and buy the best plants for your situation; shade-loving plants for the sheltered areas, sun-lovers for the warm spots, drought-resistant plants for the parched areas which may be either sunny or shaded, and swamp plants for the poorly-drained parts.

But hold on! Make sure to first test your soil in order to determine the pH level of your soil and if any, what kind of nutrients you need. Is the soil acid or alkaline? Most plants prefer soil that is slightly acidic, but there are some that must have alkaline soil to grow. You can alter the soil's pH level, but it's much easier to simply plant for the soil you have.

Now you are ready to plant. Well.... almost. Will you plant in groups or singly? If you buy 'one of everything' your garden may seem rather spotty. Group plantings are organised, harmonious and you can vary the color for interest.

Place the plant you choose around the garden bed to see how they will look before planting them out. Re-arrange them until you are satisfied. For a better look, group the plants in sets of fives or threes and not in groups of even numbers. Make sure you have a good combination of textures and colors of plants. If you have tall plants, they should go towards the back or center for equal views from all sides. Try to keep your plants away from trees. The roots of trees are fiercely competitive and will steal all the nutrients and moisture meant for your flowers.

A way to maitain harmony in your garden is choosing the right color scheme. Imagine the color of the flowers when they are in bloom. Some colors may not go with others, but can still be planted side-by-side if they have a different blooming season. Foliage color is also important. Many flower plants have silver, grey or purplish foliage that is just as attractive as the flower. This signifies that they're still in good standing well past the blooming season and therefore have value.

Keeping your Garden Tools Sharp

Sharpening Gardening Tools

There’s nothing worse than an inefficient tool when an important garden job needs to be done. Garden tools will not last forever if you do not look after them. It’s an inconvenience to stop your activity and go buy another. You just want to get the job done, and you really don’t want to spend any extra money. Continual maintenance will help you to save money and time with your gardening tools. The article below will give you some handy and helpful tips to keeping your tools working well. The following tips include the how and why of sharpening and cleaning your garden tools.

Cleaning Your Garden Tools

You want your tools to stay clean and looking good. If you dont clean your tools regularly they will become blunt. It may also make them rust quicker. So what you’ll want to do is clean excess dirt and rust off of them with water. It helps to dry and oil your tools after use to keep them in good condition. Scrape and wipe off extra stubborn dirt and rust. Cleaning can be done with a simple rag. You can also clean off some dirt after use (if they don’t need a thorough cleaning) by wiping them through and on grass. But this won’t do it if the tool needs a thorough cleaning. If joints in your tools are creaking, you’ll want to lubricate them. WD-40 will probably work best for this job. This helps ensure that rusty bolts and joints don’t break and work smoothly.

Storing Your Garden Tools

You’ll want to store your tools properly to keep them safe from harm, theft, rusting, and other things. If you uncaringly toss your tools to the side when you’re done with them, there’s a possibility of breaking or losing them. So what you want to do is have a specific safe and dry place to store your tools, such as a barn, basement, or garden shed. Make sure you keep yout tools stored where you can easily find them next time. Always remember when you have finished, clean the tool and put it back where it belongs. If you leave tools sitting in bad positions, they can break or bend, and they won’t work properly. Tools should always be kept in a safe secure place. Put them in a place where you know they are, and only you have access to them. Garden sheds have some great storage systems and are probably the best way to store your tools.

Sharpening Dull Garden Tools

Dull tools don’t work as well as they should. Not only will they not do the job efficiently, they can ruin plants, yards, and other things. They can make bad or dull cuts, or not make cuts at all. If you have a dull tool, you don’t have to buy another one. You just need to sharpen them. Before sharpening, you’ll want to make sure your tools are clean. How to Plant a Balcony Flower Garden

I’ve lived in the city all my life.  I’m talking fast-paced, crowded, loud, apartment dwelling, city living.  Don’t get me wrong. The controlled madness of city life is something I always enjoyed.  I love the access to all sorts of activities and entertainment at my fingertips. But, I so love the color and frangrance of lovely flowers and picking up a bouquet of them before going home each night just isn't cutting it any more.

Recently, I’ve wanted to make some changes in my life.  Slow things down.  Stop and smell the roses, if you will.  Things have gotten too hectic at work and I want my home (yes, apartments are “home” for many of us) to be a relaxing, safe-haven for me to return to after a hard day at work.

When I said, “Stop and smell the roses” earlier, I meant that literally.  I am very jealous of those people who have enough room in their yards for an outstanding flower garden.   This started me wondering why I can’t have it all.  Living in the city and tending to a flower garden.

What to do, what to do!?  Then it came to me.  I could create my own flower garden out on the balcony of my apartment.  Don’t laugh!  This is do-able!Now I want to do some research, getting some help turning my drab balcony into a Garden of Eden.

Now, I’m like many other single people today, who carefully budget their income, and I understood what an investment transforming my balcony would be.  I had to find pots and seeds that were cheap yet pots and seeds that added beauty.  I did a lot of scientific research to find the best flowers for the climate I live in, that would grow in the blazing sun of morning and shade in the afternoon, and would re-flower each spring … oh who am I kidding?I selected flowers, right off, based on my favorite color choices.  The Purple Coneflowers and Foxgloves both have beautiful shades of purple.  I made sure they both grow all summer and even into the early fall.  Luckily, they are easy to care for (the Coneflowers are even drought resistant).  After all, I don’t have a well developed “green thumb” yet.  I am just getting started.

I found some really cool wrought iron planter brackets to place my pots into. The brackets I purchased can be hung right off of my balcony, which is made of wrought iron as well.  There is room for about five pots in it or space to just plant the seeds directly into the planter.Adjustable mounts for the flower pots I purchased are available in case I decide to add more single pots or hanging baskets in the future.

There are so many choices out there!  I am thrilled it is springtime and I can get started on my new “garden” soon.

Improving Your Garden by Building a Fountain

A great way to spice up your garden landscape is to add a water feature. These can be both soothing and aesthetically appealing. I've found that there are nothing more relaxing than sitting on a bench next to my garden and listening to my fountain while I read a good book or do some studying. Putting in a water feature is very easy and relatively inexpensive, and
will add immensely to the pleasantness of your garden. Also, the maintenance level is minimal.

Normally, people install fountains for the benefit of the natural ambience it provides. For some reason, being around a gorgeous scene of water gives you a positive energy. This is also good if you practice Tai Chi or some form of yoga or meditation. The constant drone of the water is exactly what most people need to concentrate on what they are doing. Even if
you're not into that kind of stuff, just being in a garden with a fountain has a sort of meditative quality to it, even if you're not trying to do so. I recommend it to everyone.

When you first decide to put in a fountain, you need to put great care into picking out one that will go well with the rest of your garden. If you have any other decorations, you want to consider if it goes well with your motif. Does the fountain you're considering stand out in your garden like a sore thumb, or does it look like it was meant to be there? If you're like me, you can't naturally tell whether the fountain will be a good addition to your garden just by looking at it. So my solution was to bring my sister (a natural at fashion design and that kind of stuff) along with a picture of my garden to the store. I was able to get her expert opinion, as well as see for myself what it would look like. By doing this I was able to pick a beautiful rock fountain that goes marvelously with the rest of my garden.

However, I still had a slight problem with supplying my fountain with power. You see, my garden isn not very close to my house. I thought it would look pretty tacky to run an extension cord across my yard, so I must come up with another solution. I discussed my situation with a Home Depot employee, and he quickly found me the exact solution I needed: an
extension cord meant for being buried! All it took was a few hours of digging a small trench across my backyard, and I had power to my fountain without an unsightly cord running across my yard. After I got over this little hitch, my fountain plan went beautifully.

So if you're looking for a way to make your garden a more classy and beautiful space to be, I hope you consider installing a fountain. The whole process is surprisingly cheap, and I think that you will be very happy with the results. Having the fountain in your garden is not only
soothing, but it also adds a lot of character to an otherwise bland garden. Remember, gardens are not just for giving us vegetables! A garden is a place to go when you want to retreat from the outside world and dwell in your own thoughts with no disturbance.
